What is Community?
Community refers to the neighborhood individuals live in and the people and surrounding in those neighborhoods (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2013). Community can provide either a positive or negative influence on a child’s development. Communities, in return are also influenced by the people in them. Communities can either be affluent or low-income, both with separate risk factors. Low-income communities often expose children to unstable home lives, inadequate schools, substance abuse and encourage them to participate in criminal acts (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2013).
Why is Community important?
Community can make a difference in a child’s life. It is the ultimate environmental influence that shapes how people view the world and handle situations. Risk factors and outstanding situations in a community change how people develop. Children in communities that present risks as well as children in affluent communities can use resources in their community to address their developmental needs. At risk neighborhoods may have community centers that keep children out of the streets while other neighborhoods may have different resources that apply to their certain needs. Community can be a positive factor when manipulated correctly. If children seem to be lacking certain things, community resources can provide multiple locations where individuals can receive help.
